Specialization: Strategy, Management, Leadership and Change Management

I worked with Apple’s ESCI team and my main project was aligning supplier code and processes in alignment with UNGP guidelines, current and upcoming legislations. Additionally, it was improving the reporting and environment within facilities for supply chain workers empowering them with labor rights.

Working with my manager who was LHR expert in the Environment & Supply Chain Innovation (ESCI) team at Apple, we made a tangible impact by aligning the company's supply chain programs and code with international human rights standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and various ILO Core Conventions. This alignment was crucial in ensuring that Apple’s supply chain not only met current legal requirements but also anticipated future legislative changes. This work not only solidified Apple’s leadership position in ethical supply chain management but also contributed to broader efforts in the business and human rights space by setting new benchmarks for worker rights and safety. Within the team, I was also able to research on dorm situation, heat stress and responsible AI which were the major areas critical for labor within the facilities across the globe.

One surprising concept I encountered was the breadth and depth the sustainability initiatives could have within supply chain. Also, ESCI’s vision to drive various sustainability initiatives in both Environmental and Social aspects was surprising, amazing. Despite attaining excellence and leadership in every sustainability initiative that they launch, the thrive to do something above and beyond the requirements is exceptional. Further, we pioneered research on a mental wellness risk mitigation plan that utilized AI to identify potential stressors and health risks among workers. This innovative approach not only improved worker well-being but also demonstrated how technology can be used in unexpected ways to enhance sustainability and human rights outcomes.

The impact of the ESCI team at Apple goes beyond just improving internal processes. By setting high standards for supplier conduct and worker rights, ESCI contribute to a larger movement within the industry to prioritize human rights and sustainability. Their work influences not just Apple’s supply chain but also encourages other companies to adopt similar practices, thereby creating a ripple effect that can lead to broader systemic change in how businesses operate globally.

My experience working on the project within Apple's environmental supply chain and innovation team will add significant value to my time at Stern by allowing me to bring a practical understanding of sustainability in global supply chains into the classroom. The work I has provided me with real-world insights that I can contribute to discussions on sustainable business practices, ethics, and supply chain management.

Looking ahead to my post-MBA career, I’m confident that this experience will be invaluable. As companies increasingly prioritize sustainability, the ability to implement and manage sustainability initiatives will be crucial. Whether I pursue a role in corporate sustainability, supply chain management, or consulting, I believe my experience at Apple will position me as a strong candidate for roles that require a deep understanding of both business strategy and ethical considerations in global supply chains. Additionally, this experience has helped me develop the leadership skills needed to drive change within organizations, making me well-prepared to contribute to advancing sustainable business practices.
