MBA Fellow Develops a Strategy to Net Zero for Natoora
—
During the summer of 2022, Puja Kenia (MBA '23) interned as an NYU Stern MBA Sustainability Fellow at Natoora. Read on to learn more about her time there:
Name: Puja Kenia
Year: 2023
Specialization: Sustainable Business and Strategy
This past summer I worked with Natoora as a carbon impact fellow. Natoora is a food distribution company that supplies fruits and vegetables to restaurants and homes with the goal of revolutionizing the food system by preserving seed varieties, growing techniques and flavors that are threatened by modern industrial farming. I completed a carbon mapping project for their entire global operations that included scope 1 through 3. I used that information to develop a strategy and roadmap to net zero, aligning the company goals to the Paris Agreement. The roadmap included a detailed timeline and research to help facilitate initiation of each phase.
My time at Natoora has given me valuable experience to pivot into sustainability. Post Stern, I hope to gain more experience with a variety of ESG topics by working in ESG consulting. The internship gave me the chance to take my classroom learnings and dive deep into the carbon accounting world. At the beginning of the summer I had just enough knowledge to build familiarity with resources such as Greenhouse Gas Protocol, Science Based Targets, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), etc. After extensively researching and applying global standards for carbon accounting, I understand the challenges that even companies with the best intensions face when trying to become net zero. The industry is working to maintain integrity while simplifying carbon accounting for the masses; an important goal because businesses in all sectors need to engage now to limit the impact of global warming. My experience at Natoora has given me the confidence in my skillset and industry knowledge that I need when applying and interviewing for roles in sustainability.
