NYU Stern Hosts High Tea Reception to Celebrate the Establishment of the Fubon Center for Technology, Business, and Innovation

NYU Stern faculty, Board of Overseers members, and students gathered on Wednesday, April 11th to celebrate the establishment of The Fubon Center for Technology, Business and Innovation, made possible through the generosity and inspiration of alumnus Richard Ming-Hsing Tsai, MBA ’81, Chairman and CEO of Fubon Financial Holding Co., Ltd. and Fubon Financial Holding Co., Ltd. Mr. Tsai was in attendance with his wife, Maggie, along with their guests — Morris Huang, Senior Executive Vice President of Taipei Fubon Commercial Bank; Barry Blattman, Vice Chairman of Brookfield Asset Management; Barry Rosenstein, Managing Partner of JANA Partners, LLC, and Lizanne Rosenstein; Charles Ueng and his son, Theo Ueng; and Walter and Shirley Wang.

Also in attendance were Board of Overseers members Tanja Ahuja, Managing Director, U.S. Operations at Arkera; Ignacio Pakciarz, Founder and CEO, BigSur Partners; Rick Mayo-Smith, Co-Founder of Indochina Capital; Ed Barr, Chairman, United Water Resources; Judy Lee, CEO and Founder Dragonfly Capital, and her partner, Lieng Seng Wee; and Brett Rochkind, NYU Trustee and General Partner, General Atlantic LLC — along with Dean Raghu Sundaram, NYU President Andy Hamilton, Dean Emeritus Peter Henry, and faculty and students.

President Hamilton kicked off the reception by expressing his awe for the accomplished men and women in the room and his deep gratitude, on behalf of the University, for the opportunities Mr. Tsai will create at NYU Stern. President Hamilton noted how important it is to foster the critical intersection between business, technology, and entrepreneurship in a way that encourages interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration.

Dean Sundaram and Mr. Tsai each remarked on their shared belief that business and academic institutions must continuously innovate—and invest in innovation—in order to excel. The rapid disruption to all global industries creates incredible opportunities for students, academics, and business leaders to formulate new ideas and build new markets.

Dean Sundaram shared how The Fubon Center will be a driving force in Stern’s innovation story, and introduced the faculty leaders and their areas of focus for the center:

Professor Natalia Levina will serve as the inaugural director of the Fubon Center. Her research focuses on understanding the way people span the boundaries of organizations, professions, and cultures as they build and use new technology.

Professor Foster Provost will lead the Data Analytics area. His research focuses on aligning data mining technologies with real-world business problems.

Professor Kathleen DeRose will lead the FinTech area including NYU Stern’s annual FinTech conference in the fall, now in its third year.

Professor Melissa Schilling, a leading expert on innovation and professor of management and organizations, will oversee the center’s Technology Innovation area.
