A Message from the Director
Dear Fubon Community,
I am delighted and grateful to start my new role as the Director of NYU Stern’s Fubon Center for Technology, Business and Innovation.
The last six years have been a time of tremendous progress in AI, data science, fintech and innovation. As we look ahead, a range of forces are reshaping technological competition and rapidly altering the business and geopolitical landscape. New machine learning and platform models will blur the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds, and between the information and the biological sciences. Nations will seek greater strategic autonomy over their technological capabilities while humans will face new challenges to their intellectual autonomy. Powerful regulatory forces will refashion the strategic priorities of global corporations and startups alike, as the pace of innovation poses new challenges for technological leadership at all levels. Societies will grapple with how to transition workforces with dignity while mitigating polarization and inequality.
Over the years, my own collaboration with companies, government and civil society has been guided by the belief that the impact of technologies, however revolutionary, is not inevitable or pre-determined. Rather, their eventual effects are shaped by the design of the social, economic and political systems within which they emerge and thrive. Thus, responsible business coupled with judicious policy can and should be powerful forces of positive social change.
As Fubon enters its seventh year, we aspire to broaden our horizons, deepening our engagement with the current Fubon community while expanding our family of stakeholders. We have deep expertise and unique talent among our faculty, innovation fellows, executives, students, staff, and advisors, and NYU Stern’s institutional reputation and convening power offer a potent platform to shape leadership, discovery, learning and change.
