Biography

Manuel Galvan joined New York University Stern School of Business as a Postdoc Faculty Fellow in July 2024.
Dr. Galvan conducts research to understand the “Inequality Cycle”— how unequal social contexts shape psychology and behavior in ways that exacerbate and reinforce economic and racial disparities. His work aims to identify mechanisms that perpetuate inequality and develop evidence-based strategies for reducing its harmful effects. Current projects include investigations into racial health disparities and how discriminatory behavior is distributed among organizational decision-makers. Dr. Galvan is an alumnus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholar program. He is also the co-host of the A Bit More Complicated science podcast and founder of the Science of Social Problems blog.

Ongoing projects

  • How does understanding the distribution of discriminatory behavior in hiring inform theoretical and practical questions about reducing discrimination?
  • How do perceptions about the distribution of racial hiring discrimination shape organizational policy beliefs?
  • How do lay beliefs about racism predict misperceptions of racial health disparities?
  • How does historical slavery predict modern mortality disparities?
  • What is the distribution of racial disparities in favorable and unfavorable sentencing among federal judges?
