This past November, 19 students from the NYU Stern Undergraduate College Honors Program traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, to meet famed investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett. The trip included visits to Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio companies, a roundtable discussion with C-suite executives of insurance giant Mutual of Omaha, and a Q&A with the Oracle himself.
Through site visits and presentations by senior management, students enjoyed a unique opportunity to hear about successful businesses that Berkshire Hathaway operates across jewelry, furniture, and e-commerce. They highlighted the crucial role that Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett have played in their success, despite challenges in technology-disrupted industries such as retail and financial services.
“The best part of the trip, aside from meeting Buffett, was visiting the massive fulfillment center of the Oriental Trading Company,” honors student Sanjana Jain (BS ’18) said. “The conveyor belts and storage palettes were a tour-de-force of logistics organization.”
“It is always a pleasure to take the undergraduate honors students to Omaha to meet Warren Buffett,” Charles E. Merrill Professor of Finance and Honors Program Faculty Adviser Marti Subrahmanyam said. “Most of the attendees at these events are MBA students from other top business schools, but I am always proud of our Stern honors students who are able to hold their own and have intelligent discussions with the professionals we meet on these trips.”
