“Stern’s MSBA program is a transformative experience that will equip you with the technical, strategic, and soft skills needed to excel in the field of data analytics. Approach it with dedication, curiosity, and a proactive mindset, and you’ll find it to be an invaluable investment in your career.”

“What have you learned new today? This is what I ask at the end of every day to push my boundaries, tackle complex problems, and hone my skills in environments that demand my best. Embracing challenges allows me to continuously evolve, develop resilience, and achieve my full potential,” says Hari Sarma, MSBA Class of 2022.

When confronted with a pivotal moment in his career, Hari found himself tapping into this question: what have I learned today? He knew that in the rapidly evolving field of data analytics, continued education would be essential to his understanding of how data could drive business decisions at a higher level and give him a competitive edge in his career—which led him to seek an MSBA.

“NYU Stern's renowned reputation in finance and analytics, along with its extensive alumni network and industry connections, promised invaluable opportunities for professional growth,” he says. “Stern's curriculum distinguished itself with its rigorous integration of technical and business-oriented coursework. It was essential for me to enroll in a program that not only delved into the technical intricacies of data analytics but also prioritized their strategic implementation within a business framework.”

Hari says Stern’s curriculum exposed him to a wide range of analytical techniques, tools, and methodologies that equipped him to analyze complex data sets and apply solutions in real time. A significant value-add, Hari says, is the program’s cutting-edge focus—including leveraging the power of artificial intelligence in decision making. “It's a testament to the program's adaptability and commitment to staying at the forefront of industry trends,” he says.

In addition to vastly deepening his understanding of how harnessing data can solve complex problems, Hari also saw improvement in his presentation skills and confidence, which has made a positive impact on his performance at work. “Being able to effectively communicate complex ideas and insights gained from the program has not only enhanced my professional credibility but has also enabled me to contribute more meaningfully to projects and discussions within my organization,” he says.

A highlight of the program for Hari was the capstone project.  “The Capstone project was a cornerstone of my MSBA experience at Stern, adding immense value by providing practical, hands-on experience in applying machine learning to real-world business challenges. It elevated my ability to collaborate with talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, allowing each team member to leverage their strengths and collectively execute the end product. I applied core concepts from all my courses, with a special focus on machine learning. This pivotal experience significantly contributed to my professional career,” he reflects and notes that since graduating, he secured an internal analytics position with New York Life Insurance, which allows him to showcase his new capabilities.

Hari insists that a successful capstone experience would not have been possible without Stern’s learning environment. “Stern's MSBA program fostered a collaborative and innovative learning environment, where I had the opportunity to work with peers from diverse backgrounds and learn from experienced faculty members who were actively involved in of-the-moment research and industry projects,” he says. “Interacting with classmates from various industries and different parts of the world provided fresh perspectives and insights into our discussions, assignments, and projects. Their diverse experiences influenced my approach to work, exposing me to different methodologies, best practices, and problem-solving approaches. Collaborating with such diverse peers challenged me to think more creatively and adapt my strategies to different contexts, thereby enhancing my problem-solving skills and broadening my professional horizons.”

Maintaining these valuable relationships and actively engaging with Stern’s alumni network for mentorship, career guidance, and networking opportunities is a priority for Hari. “Stern’s alumni network is a potent asset that I am keen on leveraging to support my ongoing professional growth and development,” he says, noting that he already takes advantage of Stern’s New Jersey alumni meet up group. “Connecting with alumni who have pursued similar career paths or work in industries of interest promises invaluable insights, advice, and potential career opportunities.”

Looking ahead, Hari sees the field of analytics and data continuing to evolve in an exciting way. “What excites me is data’s potential to uncover meaningful insights and drive informed decision-making across various industries. The ability to harness the power of data to solve complex problems and optimize processes is incredibly rewarding. I aspire to lead projects that leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as AI and machine learning, to create innovative data-driven solutions that address complex business problems,” he says. “The comprehensive education and continuous learning culture fostered by Stern’s network will support my long-term professional growth and adaptability in this ever-evolving field.”
