Reflection on the 2025 Sustainability Career Boot Camp with PwC

The annual Sustainability Career Boot Camp, hosted by the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business, provides Stern undergraduate students with an intensive training program to prepare them for a variety of sustainability-oriented careers. In January 2025, we partnered with PwC for an engaging boot camp with a hands-on introduction to skills & internship opportunities in sustainability with a deep dive workshop on sustainability as a strategic imperative highlighting the key ESG concepts, frameworks and standards driving their work with clients.

The 2025 Sustainability Careers Boot Camp with PwC was an incredible opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of sustainability careers and the evolving regulatory landscape. The day started with an insightful overview of sustainability-focused career paths, followed by a panel of Stern alumni working across ESG consulting, impact investing, and tech sales of sustainability-focused products. Hearing their experiences highlighted the diverse opportunities within the field and the increasing demand for professionals who can integrate sustainability into business strategy.
One of the most impactful exercises was identifying the types of companies we could work for and the sustainability-focused roles within them. It broadened my understanding that sustainability isn’t just a job title—it can be embedded in finance, strategy, marketing, and operations within companies that prioritize responsible business practices. This perspective shift made me realize that I can incorporate sustainability into my career, whether by working at a sustainability-driven company or integrating ESG principles into a broader business role.
A key takeaway was the session on the new CSRD reporting guidelines, where PwC experts walked us through sustainability disclosure frameworks and their growing importance for businesses. The case study exercise was a fun way to put these concepts into practice, demonstrating the real-world complexities of sustainability reporting and decision-making. It was eye-opening to see how companies are being held accountable for their ESG commitments and how financial and regulatory considerations play a crucial role.
Beyond the technical knowledge, the boot camp reinforced the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability careers. Engaging with professionals and peers emphasized how sustainability requires collaboration across finance, strategy, and policy. I left the event feeling inspired and equipped with a clearer perspective on how sustainability is shaping industries and where I can make an impact.
