Class Schedules

Calendars

Please pay close attention to the meeting dates and times of your classes. Undergraduate and MBA classes meet on completely different calendars and schedules. You can find Stern’s graduate and undergraduate academic calendars here: https://www.stern.nyu.edu/portal-partners/registrar/calendars-and-impor….

Course Schedules, Classroom Assignments & Rosters

Teaching schedules, graduate and undergraduate classroom assignments, and class rosters are all accessible in Albert. There are instructions here on how to access this information in Albert. You can also view rosters through the Classlist tool in NYU Brightspace (formerly NYU Classes).

Long Classes

Please give a 10-minute, mid-class break in any class that meets for more than 80 minutes and do not dismiss your students early. If you are teaching a full day in an intensive, also give a one-hour lunch break at noon. Even if students beg you to skip one or more of the breaks, DON'T DO IT!!! Tell them it is a firm school policy and that they must speak with a dean if they want to try for a policy change. If you want to get into the discussion, you can tell them it is well documented that teaching is not as effective and learning is less when there are fewer or shorter breaks than we have planned.

Evening & Weekend MBA Classes

There is no exam period for Langone Program classes. Here are some ways faculty have been handling final exams:

  • Give a take home exam.
  • Give an online exam in NYU Classes over a 2-3 day period.
  • Give a number of shorter quizzes or tests throughout the semester and skip the large cumulative exams. This approach also helps you keep track of how your students are progressing and can be a useful attendance tool.

If you need to give an in-class final, you should schedule it for the last day of class. Many faculty use the first hour to review and the rest of the session for the exam. Others give a shorter exam first and use a take home element to address other topics, including material covered in the latter part of the last class.

Faculty Absences & Rescheduling Classes

NYU policy prohibits canceling class unless there is an emergency preventing the instructor from attending and a substitute cannot be found. (Guest speaker cancellations are an occupational hazard and we should always have a backup plan.) If you must be absent from a scheduled class meeting (including a class designated for an exam) for any reason, you and the Deputy Chair should make every effort to find a substitute instructor. Please give us as much advance notification as possible of a) the date of absence, b) the reason for the absence, and c) a brief explanation of how the class will be handled. If you need to miss more than one class session, you must get approval in advance from the Dean. If it’s a last minute emergency, email your students (copy the Department Chair and Deputy Chair) to let them know what happened and ask them to stay tuned for information on how the class will be made up. Then email your Department Chair, the Deputy Chair, and Beth Rubin (brubin@stern.nyu.edu), and we will help you figure out the best way to make up the session.

If it is impossible to secure a suitable substitute, the class may be rescheduled. The date and time must be satisfactory to virtually 100% of the students registered in the class. Please make sure a classroom is available for the time you select, arrange to have the class recorded, and provide the URL for the video stream to students who are unable to attend.
