OUR MISSION
Climate change presents one of the central challenges of our time, with a wide range of effects on financial markets and the broader economy. At the same time, financial markets play an important role in enabling the transition to a net-zero economy.
The NYU Stern Climate Finance Initiative is a cross-school initiative that supports rigorous academic research, teaching activities, and policy and other outreach work in the climate finance space.
The activities of the Climate Finance Initiative start from the world-leading research conducted at Stern. Our faculty have studied questions such as:
- To what extent are climate risks priced in equity and fixed income markets?
- Does climate change threaten financial stability, and how should regulators react?
- How can you use financial markets including derivatives to hedge climate risk exposures?
- How can we improve data to measure climate risk exposures of firms and other entities?
- What are the effects of climate risk in real estate and insurance markets?
- Do green bonds lower the cost of capital for transition projects?
- What are the determinants of solar photovoltaic adoption?
- What are the short- and long-run effects of the climate transition on oil and gas firms?
- What are the right discount rates to evaluate the social cost of carbon?
- What are the effects of non-binding net-zero commitments by firms?
- What are the economics of mandatory and voluntary carbon markets?
- How do climate risk and biodiversity risk interact?

What We Do
Research

Teaching
Based on our research efforts, Stern faculty are offering a range of classes on topics related to climate finance across our undergraduate, MBA, Executive Education, and PhD curricula.
Policy Advising
Several Stern faculty members are involved in various formal and informal policy advisory roles.
Events
We host academic researchers at Stern, hold academic research seminars and conferences, and support faculty in expanding course offerings in the climate finance space. For many of these activities, we collaborate with related efforts at the Chao-Hon Chen Institute for Global Real Estate Finance, the Volatility and Risk Institute, and the Center for Sustainable Business.
