WIN is a Social Networks Summit intended to foster collaboration and to build community.  The purpose of WIN is to bring together leading researchers studying ‘information in networks’ – its distribution, its diffusion, its value, and its influence on social and economic outcomes – in order to lay the foundation for ongoing relationships and to build a lasting multidisciplinary research community.

On September 28th-29th 2012, the NYU C.V. Starr Center for Applied Economics will host a conference to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the publication of Professor William Baumol’s seminal paper “The transactions demand for cash: an inventory theoretic approach."

Do you want to produce short films? If so, please join ProMotion Pictures for the Innocence Project Creative Brief. Maddy deLone, Executive Director of the Innocence Project, Paul Cates, Communications Director of the Innocence Project, and Alan Newton, Exoneree, will share their experiences and vision for the competition. In addition, the ProMotion Pictures board will discuss competition rules and timelines. Reception with light refreshments to follow where attendees are encourages to meet prospective teammates and to share competition ideas. This event is only open to NYU Stern, Tisch Film and ITP students and faculty.

More than 450 aspiring entrepreneurs from NYU’s student, alumni and faculty communities gathered in Paulson Auditorium to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge. During the official Kick-Off, attendees received information about NYU Stern’s 14th Annual New Venture Competition and 10th Annual Social Venture Competition – both sponsored by Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation – and NYU’s 3rd Annual Technology Venture Competition, hosted by Stern’s Berkley Center and NYU’s Innovation Venture Fund.

Sinan Aral, Assistant Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, (@sinanaral) recently spoke at Data Gotham 2012 where he made one pitch: to be doing more causal influence in data sets, particularly in networks.

As part of the Himelberg Speaker Series, Brad Feld, co-founder of TechStars, a mentor-driven start-up accelerator program, addressed a packed Cantor Boardroom at NYU Stern. An early stage investor and entrepreneur for more than 25 years, Feld shared several pieces of advice with Stern’s entrepreneurial community.

As part of NYU Stern’s Block Lunch event series, hosted by the Dean’s Office, Hugo Lindgren, editor of The New York Times Magazine, engaged with more than 100 MBA students on September 10. Lindgren spoke candidly about his career, including a stint at Businessweek after the magazine was bought by Bloomberg. He also shared some of his strategic thinking for The New York Times Magazine, and offered some perspective on the challenges facing the print journalism industry in general today.

Professor Kim Schoenholtz of the NYU Stern Center for Global Economy and Business hosted a panel on the 2012 Economic Outlook with economists David Greenlaw, Jan Hatzius and Peter Hooper.

Kicking off the fall semester, ProMotion Pictures is announcing this year’s competition sponsor: The Innocence Project, which is dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals in the US criminal justice system. At this year’s kick-off event, MBA students will have a chance to meet prospective teammates from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and to learn about leadership opportunities within the program.

More than 100 scholars from around the world gathered at NYU Stern for the 2012 International Society for Utilitarian Studies (ISUS) conference themed, “Utilitarianism: Exploring the Past, Looking to the Future.” Sponsored by NYU Stern, with generous support from the Citi Foundation and Daniel & Nancy Paduano, the ISUS conference featured discussions and research on utilitarianism and its historical development, as well as its present-day relevance in such fields as ethics, politics, law, economics and public policy.

The Fifth Annual Society for Financial Econometrics (SoFiE) Conference was hosted by the Oxford-Man Institute and held at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford this June. Bringing together academics and practitioners from around the world, the conference featured speakers from a number of leading organizations including Banque de France, NYU Stern, Harvard, Stanford and Brown.

On May 30, NYU Stern’s Center for Real Estate Finance Research and Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions and the NYU Pollack Center for Law & Business co-hosted a housing-finance reform roundtable with The Clearing House and Mayer Brown LLP. The roundtable, titled, “The Challenge of Introducing Private Capital into the Housing-Finance Marketplace,” focused on the future of residential mortgage finance.

The Leonard N. Stern School of Business Graduate Convocation Ceremony took place on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Radio City Music Hall.

On Tuesday, May 15, the Center for Real Estate Finance Research, led by Professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, held its inaugural conference.

As part of a new annual tradition, NYU Stern faculty and guests gathered to celebrate a number of recent faculty accomplishments across the School.

The winners of this year’s NYU Stern Entrepreneurs Challenge received more than $200,000 in seed money and in-kind support. After pitching their venture ideas, the five winning teams, each led by NYU students, were chosen by a panel of judges from the venture capital, technology and social enterprise sectors.

Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures, Alexis Ohanian of Reddit and Billy Chasen of Turntable.fm participated in a panel discussion at NYU Stern to discuss some of the complex issues surrounding recent legislative proposals in the area of online intellectual property.

Leading academics and practitioners gathered for a conference on “Comovement of Volatilities, Returns and Tails,” this spring, organized by Stern’s Volatility Institute, led by Nobel Laureate and Professor Robert Engle.

The third annual Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards, hosted at NYU Stern, honored several leading disruptive innovators who have impacted the worlds of business, technology, arts and entertainment. Founder of Twitter and Square Jack Dorsey and Room to Read founder John Wood received the Lifetime Achievement awards. Other honorees ranged from pop star Justin Bieber and Rick Rubin, who founded Def Jam Records in his NYU dorm room, to Steven A. Curley for his advances in cancer treatments and Dr. Patricia Bath, the first person to demonstrate Laserphaco cataract surgery.

On April 26, NYU Stern’s Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students (AHBBS) and NYU Wagner’s Black Student Alliance (BSA) co-hosted Maggie Anderson, author of "Our Black Year: One Family's Quest to Buy Black in America's Racially Divided Economy" (published by PublicAffairs, February 2012).

Stern’s annual Passport Day will be held on Thursday, April 26th, as MBA students from all cultural backgrounds share their rich heritage with fellow classmates.

In an April 23rd, 2012 plenary to the NYU Stern UC Class of 2015, Professor Arun Sundararajan describes India's fascinating digital identity initiative, shares video clips of his conversations with UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani, and outlines a research program with Professor Ravi Bapna and ISB Hyderabad that will measure the socioeconomic impact of the UID over the coming decade.

The Stern Center for Global Economy and Business presents Dr. Ewald Nowotny, Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and Member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. Governor Nowotny will discuss “Monetary Issues - The European View.”
