This year marks the 10th anniversary of the combined Information, Operation and Management Sciences (IOMS) Department, and current IOMS faculty gathered to celebrate this milestone with an event held October 29 at NYU's Torch Club. Looking back, former professor Ernest Kurnow recounts the roots of what is now the IOMS Department.

In light of the Financial Accounting Stands Board’s (FASB) proposed expansion of fair value accounting principles for financial institutions, a group of scholars, industry experts, professionals and press convened for a roundtable entitled, “Are Investors and Investment Entities Well-Served by Fair Value Accounting.”

Stephen Figlewski, Professor of Finance and an expert on derivatives, welcomes the audience to the 2010 Salomon Center NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project (DRP). The DRP Research Day was created in 1996; today the Salomon Center-NASDAQ OMX DRP Research Day enables Stern's finance faculty to present some of their current research.

Stephen Figlewski, Professor of Finance and Director of the NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project, welcomes an audience of nearly 120 to the 2010 NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project and The Volatility Institute's Symposium on "Derivatives and Proprietary Trading in the New Regulatory Regime."

Will the overseas expansion of Chinese and other BRIC companies change the face of capitalism? How should American and European companies increase their footprint in Asia? How should protectionism and sovereign wealth funds be addressed? These are some of the questions that will be posed at the third annual ‘International Symposium on Cross-Border Investment and M&A’ to be held at New York University, hosted by NYU’s Pollack Center for Law and Business on Tuesday, October 19, 2010.

In a major shift from last year’s results, fashion brands hold eight of the top 10 slots in the second annual Digital IQ Index® for Luxury. Only two brands, Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren, managed to hang on to their ‘Genius’ ranking, with newcomers Coach, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana making significant investments in the medium in 2010.

On Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8, NYU Stern and the National Council of Applied Economic Research, India, with support from the World Bank, held a workshop on "Restoring Inclusive Growth in Advanced Economies" to encourage dialogue among economists and policy makers from the G20 countries.

NYU Stern's Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation hosted a Lunchtime Chat with NYU alumnus Dennis Crowley, co-founder and CEO of Foursquare, a mobile application for social networking with some three million users worldwide. This event was presented as part of the David & Rose Himelberg Speaker Series.

NYU Stern marketing professors Eric Greenleaf, Geeta Menon, Tom Meyvis, and Vicki Morwitz, with principal investigator David Heeger, a professor in NYU’s Department of Psychology and Center for Neural Science, and Uri Hasson, an assistant professor of psychology at Princeton, were awarded a two-year, $1.1 million grant by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Among the 360-plus (and growing) economists, scholars, former Fed officials and investors that have signed and are circulating a petition to Congress and the Executive Branch urging them to keep the Federal Reserve independent are seven NYU Stern professors.

Anindya Ghose, NYU Stern Assistant Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, and his NYU collaborators were awarded a $2.124 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) based on the Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship For Service (SFS) program for research and teaching of security and privacy issues on the Internet and other critical information infrastructure.

Sinan Aral, assistant professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, was given the 2009 IBM faculty award, a cash grant that is awarded annually as a result of a worldwide competition created to foster collaboration between researchers at leading universities and those in IBM research, development and services organizations.

At an intimate reception on October 5, sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Princeton University Press and NYU Stern, William Baumol, Harold Price Professor of Entrepreneurship and academic director of Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, was honored for his most recently published book, The Microtheory of Innovative Entrepreneurship.

In September, NYU Stern generated more than 1,000 media hits. Stern faculty were featured for their views on a number of topics including the threat of a double dip recession, the challenges facing the Eurozone, proposed financial regulation and consumer psychology in a variety of prominent media outlets including Bloomberg Businessweek, the Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, in more than 40 op-eds, Stern faculty offered their perspectives on a number of topics including BP and the Gulf oil spill, Tea Party victories, the trajectories of foreign economies and recommended priorities for reform.

Professor Stephen Brown, David S. Loeb Professor of Finance at NYU Stern, was selected by the Australian Research Council (ARC) as a member of Research Evaluation Committee for the Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) initiative for 2010. The Research Evaluation Committee, consisting of 149 internationally recognized scholars, will be evaluating every academic discipline within all Australian universities.

The US Departments of Housing and Urban Development, and the Treasury, are convening policymakers, industry groups, private industry participants, and citizen advocacy groups to discuss the policies and goals of housing finance reform. NYU Stern Professor of Economics Lawrence J. White, a former bank regulator who served as a Board Member of Freddie Mac, is a conference panelist and available for interviews.

On September 22, Robin Chase spoke candidly to an audience of aspiring entrepreneurs about how she grew Zipcar into the world’s largest car-sharing service. As part of the David & Rose Himelberg Speaker Series, the event was hosted by NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

More than 450 NYU students, alumni and researchers gathered, standing-room-only, in Paulson auditorium on September 21 to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge.

Second quarter corporate earnings reports showing strong growth from luxury retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Tiffany indicate that high-end brands, vs. mass market retailers, are leading in the economic recovery. Academic and industry experts explain why and discuss the future of the global luxury sector.

In September, NYU Stern hosted WIN – Workshop on Information in Networks – to bring together leading researchers across disciplines studying ‘information in networks.’ The conference was attended by speakers and participants from top companies and universities, including Google Research, HP Labs, IBM, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Harvard University, MIT, NYU Stern, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, and University of Pennsylvania.

 Sinan Aral, Assistant Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, has been selected as a 2010 PopTech Science Fellow. Professor Aral joins a handful of other extremely high potential, socially engaged working scientists who view science as an essential way of thinking, discovering, understanding and deciding, and who can effectively communicate their work and its importance to the public.

Despite the greatest economic crisis since the Depression, retailers saw revenues from e-commerce increase in 2009, signaling a shift from bricks to clicks. By 2014 U.S. online retail sales are forecasted to increase to $250 billion and the web influences 46 percent of offline purchases.

The Stern Hedge Fund Association (SHFA) joins the ranks of NYU Stern’s some 40 MBA student clubs this fall. “As the hedge fund industry continues to grow and seek talent with graduate degrees, the SHFA will serve as a gateway for current MBA students to learn about the hedge fund industry,” explains Agata Rzamek, CAIA, club co-president. “The club will also facilitate networking between current students and alumni and other professionals in the field.”

Additionally in some 30 op-eds, Stern faculty offered their perspectives on the floods in Pakistan and banking reform, and shared lessons from the Great Depression.

In a new study, the first and largest of its kind, NYU Stern Professor of Marketing Scott Galloway, Dean of The George Washington University School of Business Doug Guthrie, and a team of experts evaluated and ranked 100 US Senators’ Digital IQ® including website strength, social media following and sentiment, digital marketing aptitude and search engine optimization skills. The results reveal that Republican Senators are savvier online and are acquiring likes and followers at a greater velocity than Democratic Senators.
