University of Amsterdam

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM:
The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) has its roots in the seventeenth century. In 1632, during the Dutch Golden Age, the Athenaeum Illustre was founded in Amsterdam to train students in Trade and Philosophy. In 1877, the Athenaeum Illustre became the Universiteit van Amsterdam and was permitted to confer the highest educational degrees. Studying at the Universiteit van Amsterdam provides students with a double challenge: the intellectual challenge of a comprehensive academic curriculum and Amsterdam’s exciting urban environment. The UvA offers undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in over sixty disciplines. The lecturers incorporate today’s research results into tomorrow’s lectures. Since the UvA is in contact with universities all across the globe, virtually every one of its students can do part of the curriculum abroad or meet students from all over the world in their Amsterdam classroom. The UvA is a large university, but a small scale has been preserved in how it is organized. Many of the study programs have their own buildings in the city of Amsterdam. The city itself is a popular cultural and media centre and an international junction of commercial firms. So it is a very attractive spot with a view to a future career. This is what the Universiteit van Amsterdam has to offer. What it asks in return is that its students make an active effort to learn as much as they can. This combination enables students at the Universiteit van Amsterdam to develop personally and intellectually alike. The university is housed in both classic and modern buildings, most of which are located in the historic city centre. The combination of attractive buildings - situated along a canal, in a courtyard or surrounded by water - at the same time offering state-of-the-art facilities, is what makes the UvA so unique.
