Alyssa de Ubl (BS '12)
“Social media is an easy and inexpensive alternative to conventional marketing, especially for small businesses,” says Stern junior Alyssa de Ubl, Co-Founder and COO of Natan.tv, a millennial-focused social media blog and consulting company. “My generation has grown up with new media, making us uniquely qualified to consult on tools such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Blogger to help companies build their online presence and reach their target audience.”
Alyssa met NYU Steinhardt student Natan Edelsburg, who conceived of Natan.tv, while both were studying abroad at NYU in Prague last spring and they launched the web site soon after. “NTV originated as a ‘Mind of Millennials’ blog network,” she explains. “To sustain it financially, we took on consulting projects and discovered a niche offering millennial perspectives on social media marketing. That side of the company quickly took off and is where I’ve been able to use my business background to add the most value to our team.”
Alyssa, who is double majoring in finance and accounting with a specialization in entrepreneurship, also credits the support of the Stern community for helping to get their company off the ground. “By being in a collaborative environment surrounded by accomplished peers, we’ve had the greatest sounding board for new ideas and no shortage of people willing to help.” The experience has also added a new dimension to her in-classroom learning. “Through NTV projects, I’ve seen just how much my Stern coursework applies to the real world. At the same time, starting an entrepreneurial venture allows me to bring a fresh perspective to classroom discussions.”
In addition to her Stern studies and her position at Natan.tv, Alyssa interns at an investment bank and serves as vice president for both the Undergraduate Stern Women in Business club and the Stern Accounting Society. She says balancing so many different activities has taught her valuable skills. “I’ve become adept at time management and multitasking, and I’ve learned to set priorities and communicate with my coworkers.”
Alyssa looks forward to her remaining time at Stern as well as to what the future brings for NTV. “The great thing about starting a company is that there is no set path. We continue to develop the business and take on new clients, and I’m excited to see our growth as social media marketing becomes even more in demand.”
