My math skills are rusty. What should I do to get ready to come back to school? | To help you prepare, we have provided access to two mathematics tutorials – one in Algebra and one in Calculus. These tutorials offer practice tests and instruction which allow you to re-familiarize yourself with key mathematical concepts. To access the tutorials, click here. You will need to create a Harvard account by clicking on "Register" before you can access the tutorials. For those seeking additional math review, a helpful resource is Schaum’s Outline of Elementary Algebra Recommended chapters to review: Chapter 1: From Arithmetic to Algebra Chapter 2: Simple Equations and Their Solutions Chapter 3: Signed Numbers Chapter 4: Introduction to Monomials and Polynomials Chapter 5: First Degree Equations Chapter 6: Formulas Chapter 7: Graphs of Linear Equations Chapter 8: Introduction to Simultaneous Equations Chapter 10: Products and Factoring Chapter 11: Fractions Chapter 12: Roots and Radicals Chapter 13: Quadratic Equations After you have reviewed the tutorial materials, we require you to take an Almaris Math Skills Assessment. The tests at the end of the Harvard tutorials do not count toward the Math Skills Assessment. The assessment is a diagnosis of need, not a measure of success or failure. If you need to improve these skills, we provide a series of early morning sessions from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on certain class days at Stern. Even students proficient in quantitative material often attend these sessions. An early morning sessions schedule will be provided during orientation. |
How do I access the Almaris Math Skills Assessment? | Go to the Almaris website by clicking here or on the link provided on the Pre-Residency Checklist page. Register using your email address, name, and the group designation - EMBA. After you have registered, login and take the assessment. If you must stop before you have finished the assessment, remember to save your work before logging out. In order to demonstrate proficiency, you must receive a score of at least 80% on one of your attempts. You can take the assessment up to three times. If you do not earn an 80% after three attempts, you will be required to attend the early morning review sessions from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on certain class days at Stern. An early morning session schedule will be provided during orientation. Regardless of the score they receive on the assessment, many students attend the early morning sessions. |
When will I have access to career services? | Eliza Shanley, Senior Director of the Career Center for Working Professionals (CCWP), will provide you with a brief overview of the CCWP on your first day at the residency at Tarrytown House. The Career Center for Working Professionals is staffed with six professional coaches available for one-on-one meetings that can be conducted in person, by phone, or over Skype or Google Hangouts. An initial 30 minute appointment with a CCWP coach is required of all incoming EMBAs in order to establish where you are currently in your career development and discuss your personal goals for leveraging your MBA education. In this initial meeting your coach will introduce you to the resources and programming offered by the CCWP and, if appropriate, recommend a personal career development strategy. Due to the seniority and depth of experience of the typical Executive MBA student an on-campus recruiting option does not apply and individual coaching is the preferred option. For this initial meeting you will be assigned to one of the CCWP coaches but if you choose to continue utilizing the coaching service you will be able to select a different coach if you desire. Your coach assignment will be included in the materials you receive during orientation along with instructions for making your appointment. Soon after you return from the residency at Tarrytown, you will receive notification that you have access to your personal career account which includes a variety of online resources, job postings, notifications regarding career-related events, and ongoing access to individual coaching appointments. Your relationship with the CCWP office will continue throughout your 22 months at Stern and beyond - all Stern alumni have access to the CCWP for life - so our interest in your career development and success continues long after you complete your degree. |
