Building a Rich Legacy: The Henry Kaufman Initiative in Financial History

Building on Stern’s renowned legacy in financial history, from Marcus Nadler, who joined the finance department in the 1920s, and running through to Professor Emeritus of Economics Richard Sylla and others, Stern has created an initiative to focus and deepen that pursuit. Named for Dr. Henry Kaufman (ARTS ’48, PhD ’58), chairman emeritus and a current member of the NYU Stern School of Business Executive Board, the Henry Kaufman Initiative in Financial History is co-directed by Viral Acharya, professor of finance, and Bruce Tuckman, clinical professor of finance. Under the leadership of these two accomplished senior faculty, each with deep knowledge and expertise, and outstanding personal academic and service records in financial regulation in their own right, the initiative will sponsor research, host seminars and visiting scholars, and coordinate the teaching of financial history across the School. Under the initiative, undergraduate and MBA students are being offered a new course aimed at teaching students to understand how people and events of the past have shaped the present US financial system.
