Ordering Attire

Academic Attire must be worn to participate in Stern’s Graduate Convocation ceremony and NYU’s All-University Commencement. Order your academic attire online from Herff Jones Inc., between Monday, March 30, 2020 and Tuesday, April 21, 2020. Please place your order by the deadline to ensure that it will be processed on time.

Rental Fee

Master's cap, gown and hood: $75.00
Doctoral cap, gown and hood: $85.00

Picking Up Attire

Pick up your academic attire at the Kimmel Center for University Life, 4th floor, 60 Washington Square South:

• Tuesday, May 12, 2020: 11:00 am - 6:00 pm (on-time orders only)
• Wednesday, May 13, 2020: 11:00 am - 6:00 pm (on-time orders only)
• Thursday, May 14, 2020: 11:00 am - 8:00 pm
• Friday, May 15, 2020: 11:00 am - 6:00 pm
• Monday, May 18, 2020: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
• Tuesday, May 19, 2020: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Returning Attire

Academic attire is required for NYU's All-University Commencement and Stern’s Graduate Convocation, and the same attire should be used for both ceremonies. You may return your academic attire immediately following Stern’s Graduate Convocation (or NYU's All-University Commencement if you don't plan to attend Stern's School ceremony) to the bins located outside the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Alternatively, you may return your attire to an on-site collection bin at the NYU Bookstore at 726 Broadway from Wednesday, May 20 through Tuesday, May 26. 

Academic attire can be returned to the bookstore during the following hours:

• Wednesday, May 20, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
• Thursday, May 21, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
• Friday, May 22, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm
• Saturday, May 23, 2020: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
• Sunday, May 24, 2020: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
• Monday, May 25, 2020: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
• Tuesday, May 26, 2020: 9:00 am - 7:00 pm

Herff Jones, Inc. will hold the renter financially responsible for unreturned items.

Late Orders

Candidates are required to wear academic attire to NYU's All-University Commencement and Stern's Graduate Convocation. The last day to order academic attire on time is Tuesday, April 21.

Third Party Academic Attire Pick-up

A third party may pick up academic attire if the following documentation is provided at the time of pick-up:

• Photocopy of the graduate’s NYU ID, front and back
• Photo ID of person picking up academic attire
• Third Party Pick-Up Authorization Form (2020 form to be posted later) completed and printed. 

*If someone else is also picking up your All-University Commencement tickets, make two copies of these documents. One set will be collected as proof of third party ticket pick-up and will not be returned.

Note: Academic attire distribution is not a function of the Kimmel Center or the NYU Bookstore. Kimmel Center and Bookstore staff cannot accept any academic attire orders or changes to orders at any time. Exchanges and/or corrections may be made to your academic attire when you pick it up at the Kimmel Center in May.

Helpful Hints:

Since the rented attire has been folded and placed in a bag for distribution, it is recommended that you pick it up in time to have it pressed before the ceremony.

Previous graduates have recommended not wearing very high heels since it is difficult to march and navigate the theater stage stairs in this type of footwear.

If you can, wear a shirt or dress with buttons down the front, as the hood needs to connect to something in order to lie properly over the gown. Alternatively, bring a safety pin.

In addition, bobby pins are useful for securing the mortarboard cap.
