At the conclusion of an eight-month competition, NYU’s most promising innovators received startup funding and pro-bono services valued at more than $250,000 at NYU Stern’s annual Entrepreneurs Challenge, organized by the School’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship.

On Friday, May 14, the final teams in the Entrepreneurs Challenge, hosted by NYU Stern's Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship, will pitch off to see which ventures win the grand prizes.

Excerpt from Forbes-- "In addition to expansive, long-term structural change, initiatives that directly support women founders are critical and urgently needed. That’s why the NYU Stern School of Business’s Endless Frontier Labs launched an initiative to fund women-founded startups: to help us reclaim our place as foundational contributors to global prosperity."

Today, New York University Stern School of Business announced the establishment of the Fred Renwick Visiting Faculty Fellows Program, a new program aimed at expanding the inclusion of diverse perspectives at Stern. Made possible through a generous, endowed gift from an anonymous donor to NYU Stern, the program seeks to initiate and deepen research relationships, to build and grow academic and faculty networks, and to enrich students’ classroom experiences, with the perspectives of Black/African-American and other underrepresented and indigenous groups. The program is directed by Batia Wiesenfeld, the Andre J.L. Koo Professor of Management at NYU Stern.

A sampling of media highlights for the week of May 11, 2021

On Tuesday, May 11, NYU Stern’s Business and Society Program (BSP) will host the 2021 Ashok C. Sani Distinguished Scholar-In-Residence Lecture, delivered by Sallie Krawcheck, CEO and Co-founder, Ellevest. This year's talk will be entitled, "Women Are the Social Safety Net."

Excerpt from Poets & Quants-- "I picked NYU Stern because I wanted to be in New York City during my MBA. Being in the city has allowed me to have an immersive recruiting process, expose myself to amazing social experiences, and see business in action. During the recruiting season, I was able to tour the offices of many major companies (pre-Covid) and discover many smaller firms that I had never heard of. I get to try new cuisines every week and engage with people from all around the world on a daily basis. In the city, I am constantly surrounded by consumer behavior, technological innovation, and evolving business models. Seeing the concepts you read about in action really helps the course material stick."

Ultimately, I chose Stern because of the community. I interviewed during Stern Perspectives Interview Weekend and left knowing there was no other school for me. I witnessed a collegial tight-knit atmosphere not just amongst current students, but also the alumni who eagerly returned to conduct interviews. Stern’s MBA program is much smaller (my class has 350 students) in comparison to other programs, so it’s no surprise that alumni stay closely connected."

Excerpt from Financial Times-- "Nespresso turned to NYU Stern School of Business in New York to create a custom executive course, run most years since 2016, to help employees understand coffee sustainability. There have been 118 participants, from different levels of the company, and what they have learnt has already helped it improve recycling rates."
 
"Tensie Whelan, director of the Center for Sustainable Business at NYU Stern, says many executives want help navigating the 'alphabet soup' of standards used by companies to measure their sustainability efforts. The acquisition of these and other skills represents 'the next wave of good management', she suggests."

Excerpt from Executive Courses-- "NYU Stern School of Business in New York City runs the Change Leadership: Strategies for Organizational Growth in a Dynamic World program. The four-day online executive course is designed to guide leaders through the process of sparking and leading successful change while ensuring business growth. Participants learn how to diagnose the needs of their company, develop a plan for change and examine case studies that illustrate different implementation techniques."

Excerpt from Poets & Quants-- "This year our professors come from 12 schools outside of the United States and 21 schools based in the U.S. Some six schools — Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, Northwestern Kellogg, NYU Stern, Wharton, and the Yale School of Management — placed two professors each on this year’s list. There are 15 women on this year’s list, up from a dozen last year, but still down from the record 16 two years ago. This year we received more than 2,200 nominations for nearly 150 professors. That’s right on par with last year’s numbers when just over 2,000 nominations poured in with about 160 professors to evaluate."

Excerpt from Clear Admit-- "It turned out that NYU Stern was the perfect place to start such a service. We interviewed more than 20 of our friends on their experience with offline and online networking events and surveyed over 50 additional people. We then met with the Office of Career Development to hear the school’s perspective on what pain points they had holding networking events online. When we demoed our prototype, the head of the Career Office said “this is exactly what we need… No one has shared anything like this and everyone’s been looking for it.” Hearing that, we knew we were onto something."
 
"Next, we found teammates through the NYU Startup Team Hunt events held by the NYU Entrepreneurial Institute and booked free consultations with the Help Desk at Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship. We spoke with professor Jihoon Rim, who was the CEO of Kakao and whom we had taken the Managing a High-Tech Company course from the previous semester. He helped us understand what we should be testing and where our priorities should lie."

On Friday, April 30, NYU Stern's Volatility & Risk Institute hosted its Second Annual Conference, titled, “A Financial Risk Framework For Climate Change: Portfolio Construction, Stress Testing, and Risk Transfer.”

Excerpt from Fortune-- "NYU was among the first to offer fintech as its own specialization. Other schools have followed suit."

In January NYU Stern’s Office of Student Engagement (OSE) introduced a new, intensive-style Stern Solutions experiential learning course, “Tech Solutions.” In the four-week class offered online, two-year Full-time and Langone Part-time MBAs were charged with helping to provide real-time solutions for corporate partners The Wall Street Journal & Dow Jones, and Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans.

The Fubon Center will host a fireside chat featuring Terrance Odean, Rudd Family Foundation Professor of Finance at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, moderated by Professor Melissa Schilling.

In this program, we will examine best-practices related to the business use of social media and digital marketing.

Wharton Prof. Mauro F. Guillén will join NYU Stern Prof. Sinziana Dorobantu to share insights and answer questions from his new book 2030: How Today's Biggest Trends Will Collide and Reshape the Future of Everything. He will relate this new work to his foundational research on globalization.
