NYU Stern Students Win National Low Carbon Case Competition
—
A team of NYU Stern students, sponsored by the Stern Energy Club, won first place in the inaugural National Low Carbon Case Competition hosted by the Yale School of Management on November 14. The team of judges, led by Bob Litterman, former head of risk management at Goldman Sachs, judged the student teams on their strategies to lower the carbon intensity of a hypothetical university’s investment portfolio.
NYU Stern students Janul Hernandez, Russell Karas, Dillon Lanius, Juan Gonzalez Paris and Sebastian Vanderzeil took home the $10,000 prize with an investment plan that divested from companies who owned or extracted fossil fuels while simultaneously practicing shareholder engagement with utility companies and energy-intensive manufacturers. The students faced 10 competing teams from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, MIT Sloan School of Management and the Yale School of Management.
