James Gorman, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley, addressed a packed auditorium of NYU Stern students, faculty and alumni this fall. Sitting down with Professor Charles Murphy, Gorman discussed his career path, his experience leading Morgan Stanley following the financial crisis, and the opportunities and challenges facing today’s financial industry.

- Careers don’t come in a straight line. Do what you’re interested in, not what others tell you to do.
- Accept that you cannot have it all, or risk going into overdrive.
- Have self confidence in what you’re good at, and be aggressive in that area.
- Always ask questions, but don’t assume that you or others have all the answers.
- Once you make a decision, move quickly.
