ProMotion Pictures Kick-off

Kicking off the fall semester, ProMotion Pictures is announcing this year’s competition sponsor: The Innocence Project, which is dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals in the US criminal justice system. At this year’s kick-off event, MBA students will have a chance to meet prospective teammates from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and to learn about leadership opportunities within the program.

Academics Convene for 2012 International Society for Utilitarian Studies (ISUS) Conference

More than 100 scholars from around the world gathered at NYU Stern for the 2012 International Society for Utilitarian Studies (ISUS) conference themed, “Utilitarianism: Exploring the Past, Looking to the Future.” Sponsored by NYU Stern, with generous support from the Citi Foundation and Daniel & Nancy Paduano, the ISUS conference featured discussions and research on utilitarianism and its historical development, as well as its present-day relevance in such fields as ethics, politics, law, economics and public policy.

Scholars and Practitioners Convene for 5th Annual Society for Financial Econometrics Conference

The Fifth Annual Society for Financial Econometrics (SoFiE) Conference was hosted by the Oxford-Man Institute and held at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford this June. Bringing together academics and practitioners from around the world, the conference featured speakers from a number of leading organizations including Banque de France, NYU Stern, Harvard, Stanford and Brown.

On May 30, NYU Stern’s Center for Real Estate Finance Research and Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions and the NYU Pollack Center for Law & Business co-hosted a housing-finance reform roundtable with The Clearing House and Mayer Brown LLP. The roundtable, titled, “The Challenge of Introducing Private Capital into the Housing-Finance Marketplace,” focused on the future of residential mortgage finance.

NYU Stern Hosts the 2012 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards

The third annual Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards, hosted at NYU Stern, honored several leading disruptive innovators who have impacted the worlds of business, technology, arts and entertainment. Founder of Twitter and Square Jack Dorsey and Room to Read founder John Wood received the Lifetime Achievement awards. Other honorees ranged from pop star Justin Bieber and Rick Rubin, who founded Def Jam Records in his NYU dorm room, to Steven A. Curley for his advances in cancer treatments and Dr. Patricia Bath, the first person to demonstrate Laserphaco cataract surgery.

Professor Paul Romer Discusses Charter Cities With Octavio Sanchez of Honduras

On April 20, the NYU Stern Latin American Business Association (LABA) held its third annual conference, “The Latin American Decade: Emerging Challenges and New Opportunities.” The conference closed with a fireside chat, titled, “Using Reform Zones to Change Norms and Law,” with Professor Paul Romer and Octavio Sanchez, the Chief of Staff to the President of Honduras. The two speakers discussed Professor Romer’s charter city concept and the economic and political climate in Honduras.

John Bell of Social@Ogilvy on How to Unlock the Value of Social Media

“Unlocking the value of social media is difficult,” said John Bell, global managing director of Social@Ogilvy, who estimates that just 20 percent of businesses receive 80 percent of potential benefits from social media. As part of NYU Stern’s Center for Measurable Marketing Speaker Series, Bell shared a sales impact study on the value of integrated social media marketing this spring.

Paul Volcker Discusses Prospects for Financial Reform at Seventh Annual Haitkin Lecture

Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board Paul Volcker spoke with a group of more than 100 students at the seventh annual Haitkin Lecture, organized by Stern’s Business & Society Program Area. Looking at the prospects for financial reform, Volcker underscored the importance of government oversight in today’s markets and stressed the critical role of internal controls in banks.
