NYU alumnus Larry Silverstein (ARTS '52), who serves as an honorary vice chair of NYU’s Board of Trustees, sat down with a group of MBA students during a Leadership Luncheon Series. He spoke candidly about his 55-year career in the real estate industry, including the recent progress and challenges facing the reconstruction of the World Trade Center site.

In conjunction with The Economist’s special report on the “Future of Jobs” (September 2011), Nobel Laureate Professor Michael Spence and Matthew Bishop, US business editor and New York bureau chief at The Economist, discussed recent trends in the job market in NYU Stern's Paulson Auditorium.

The theme of the 2011 GFA conference is "Navigating Uncertain Waters." The conference will include a keynote address by Eric Varvel, Chief Executive Officer, Investment Bank of Credit Suisse; panel discussions; and a cocktail reception.

On September 26, 2011 the NYU Stern Center for Global Economy and Business, led by Professor Kermit Schoenholtz, hosted Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

NYU Stern Salomon Center Hosted Sir John Vickers who discussed the proposed financial regulation set forth by the UK's Independent Commission on Banking. Following his speech, he joined a panel discussion led by Gillian Tett, US managing editor of the Financial Times; James Staley, CEO of JP Morgan's investment bank; and Ingo Walter, Seymour Milstein Professor of Finance, Corporate Governance and Ethics, and Vice Dean of Faculty.

WIN is a Social Networks Summit intended to foster collaboration and to build community. The increasing availability of massive networked data is revolutionizing the scientific study of a variety of phenomena in fields as diverse as Computer Science, Economics, Physics and Sociology. WIN brings together leading researchers studying ‘information in networks’ – its distribution, its diffusion, its value, and its influence on social and economic outcomes – in order to lay the foundation for ongoing relationships and to build a lasting multidisciplinary research community.

Economists and policy makers from the G20 countries gathered at NYU for a two-day, deep-dive on employment this September. Hosted by NYU Stern and the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), and with support from the World Bank, the workshop entitled, “Employment – Global and Country Perspectives,” explored a number of trends and issues.

Researchers studying information in networks gathered at NYU Stern for the third annual Workshop on Information Networks (WIN) Summit, organized by Sinan Aral, assistant professor of information, operations and management sciences; Arun Sundararjan, associate professor of information, operations and management sciences; and Foster Provost, professor of information, operations and management sciences.

More than 450 aspiring entrepreneurs from NYU’s student, alumni and faculty communities gathered in Paulson Auditorium to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge. During the official Kick-Off, attendees received information about NYU Stern’s 13th Annual New Venture Competition and 9th Annual Social Venture Competition – both sponsored by Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation – and NYU’s 2nd Annual Technology Venture Competition, hosted by Stern’s Berkley Center and NYU’s Innovation Venture Fund.

Students, alumni and faculty from across the University will have an opportunity to learn about Stern's 13th Annual New Venture Competition and Ninth Annual Social Venture Competition, as well as NYU's Second Annual Technology Venture Competition. Attendees will also hear from previous winners and past judges.

Having a chance to sit down to lunch with an expert in their respective field doesn’t happen every day, but it did happen this spring for students in NYU Stern’s full-time MBA program. As part of the School’s Leadership Luncheon Series, coordinated by the Leadership Development team, students had a chance to hear from NYC real estate investor and developer Larry Silverstein, president and CEO of Silverstein Properties; Stephen Sadove, chairman and CEO of Saks Inc.; and Captain Jamie Peace, veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

More than 80 academics, marketing professionals and industry experts, convened for NYU Stern’s 2011 Conference on “Measurable Marketing in a Digital World,” hosted by the School’s Center for Measurable Marketing. Participants explored the largest challenges facing advertisers, the latest in digital media, how organizations should be measuring the effectiveness and ROI of digital advertising, and how to take advantage of cross media synergies.

Pankaj Ghemawat, Anselmo Rubiralta Professor of Global Strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona and Visiting Research Scholar at NYU Stern, spoke to NYU Stern alumni and students about his latest book, World 3.0, which offers a new approach to globalization.

Over the spring semester, undergraduate students from across NYU teamed up to compete for up to $20,000 in Stern’s inaugural Social Impact Business Challenge.

The Leonard N. Stern School of Business Graduate Convocation Ceremony took place on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the Jacob K. Javits Center of New York - Javits Center North. Graduate Convocation, which is held in addition to New York University’s Commencement Exercises, honors students who have completed the requirements for advanced degrees from the NYU Stern School. Each student is recognized individually.

The Leonard N. Stern School of Business Undergraduate Baccalaureate Ceremony took place on Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. Baccalaureate, which is held in addition to New York University's Commencement Exercises, honors students who have completed the requirements for bachelors degrees from the NYU Stern School. Each student is recognized individually, and prizes for extracurricular and academic achievements are awarded.

NYU Stern faculty and guests gathered in Tisch Hall to honor the School’s existing faculty chairs and to celebrate this year’s recipients of endowed chairs. Vice Dean of Faculty Ingo Walter, Seymour Milstein Professor of Ethics and Corporate Governance and Strategy, recognized Stern’s current faculty chairs – each of whom were presented a captain’s chair in their honor.

The 2011 NYU Directors’ Institute, hosted by the NYU Pollack Center for Law and Business on May 6, 2011, was themed “Corporate Governance: A New Governance Landscape?” The event featured prominent speakers from a variety of industries discussing topics such as: maintaining high ethical standards and avoiding litigation, successfully navigating mergers and acquisitions, and handling compensation issues. The NYU Directors’ Institute is an annual continuing education program for directors, general counsels and corporate secretaries, designed to strengthen the corporate governance practices of boards of directors and help directors stay up-to-date on their legal, fiduciary and ethical responsibilities.

The NYU Stern Entrepreneurs Challenge, organized by the School’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, is the premier platform for identifying, nurturing and showcasing entrepreneurial talent at NYU. Lasting eight months, it provides aspiring entrepreneurs with frameworks, mentoring and financial support to stimulate new venture creation.

More than 200 NYU Stern students, faculty, alumni and members of the business community gathered in Paulson Auditorium to hear Professor Viral Acharya, Matthew Richardson and Lawrence White discuss their new book, Guaranteed to Fail: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Debacle of Mortgage Finance (Princeton University Press, March 2011), co-authored with Professor Stijn Van Niewerburgh.

The Right Honorable Gordon Brown, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, sat down with a select group of MBA, executive MBA and undergraduate students from NYU Stern to discuss the economic crisis, the role of policymakers in preventing future crises and the growing interconnectedness of world economies.

Nearly 200 alumni, guests, and friends of New York University gathered for the annual Ashok C. Sani Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence Lecture featuring Bill Drayton, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, who delivered a presentation entitled “Values in a Everyone a Changemaker World.”
