In light of the Financial Accounting Stands Board’s (FASB) proposed expansion of fair value accounting principles for financial institutions, a group of scholars, industry experts, professionals and press convened for a roundtable entitled, “Are Investors and Investment Entities Well-Served by Fair Value Accounting.”

Stephen Figlewski, Professor of Finance and an expert on derivatives, welcomes the audience to the 2010 Salomon Center NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project (DRP). The DRP Research Day was created in 1996; today the Salomon Center-NASDAQ OMX DRP Research Day enables Stern's finance faculty to present some of their current research.

Stephen Figlewski, Professor of Finance and Director of the NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project, welcomes an audience of nearly 120 to the 2010 NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project and The Volatility Institute's Symposium on "Derivatives and Proprietary Trading in the New Regulatory Regime."

Will the overseas expansion of Chinese and other BRIC companies change the face of capitalism? How should American and European companies increase their footprint in Asia? How should protectionism and sovereign wealth funds be addressed? These are some of the questions that will be posed at the third annual ‘International Symposium on Cross-Border Investment and M&A’ to be held at New York University, hosted by NYU’s Pollack Center for Law and Business on Tuesday, October 19, 2010.

On Thursday, October 7 and Friday, October 8, NYU Stern and the National Council of Applied Economic Research, India, with support from the World Bank, held a workshop on "Restoring Inclusive Growth in Advanced Economies" to encourage dialogue among economists and policy makers from the G20 countries.

NYU Stern's Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation hosted a Lunchtime Chat with NYU alumnus Dennis Crowley, co-founder and CEO of Foursquare, a mobile application for social networking with some three million users worldwide. This event was presented as part of the David & Rose Himelberg Speaker Series.

At an intimate reception on October 5, sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Princeton University Press and NYU Stern, William Baumol, Harold Price Professor of Entrepreneurship and academic director of Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, was honored for his most recently published book, The Microtheory of Innovative Entrepreneurship.

On September 22, Robin Chase spoke candidly to an audience of aspiring entrepreneurs about how she grew Zipcar into the world’s largest car-sharing service. As part of the David & Rose Himelberg Speaker Series, the event was hosted by NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

More than 450 NYU students, alumni and researchers gathered, standing-room-only, in Paulson auditorium on September 21 to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge.

Second quarter corporate earnings reports showing strong growth from luxury retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Tiffany indicate that high-end brands, vs. mass market retailers, are leading in the economic recovery. Academic and industry experts explain why and discuss the future of the global luxury sector.

In September, NYU Stern hosted WIN – Workshop on Information in Networks – to bring together leading researchers across disciplines studying ‘information in networks.’ The conference was attended by speakers and participants from top companies and universities, including Google Research, HP Labs, IBM, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Harvard University, MIT, NYU Stern, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, and University of Pennsylvania.

On August 2, NYU Stern hosted Timothy Geithner, US Secretary of the Treasury, who gave his first public remarks since the enactment of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The Secretary addressed the core principles that will guide the implementation of these historic reforms.

Professor Edward Altman, a world-renowned expert in the field of corporate bankruptcy, distressed debt and credit risk analysis, started off the event discussing "How the Financial Crisis Has Affected the Credit Markets."

The Leonard N. Stern School of Business Graduate Convocation Ceremony took place on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Radio City Music Hall. Graduate Convocation, which is held in addition to New York University’s Commencement Exercises, honors students who have completed the requirements for advanced degrees from the NYU Stern School. Each student is recognized individually.

The Leonard N. Stern School of Business Undergraduate Baccalaureate Ceremony took place on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Radio City Music Hall. Baccalaureate, which is held in addition to New York University's Commencement Exercises, honors students who have completed the requirements for bachelors degrees from the NYU Stern School. Each student is recognized individually, and prizes for extracurricular and academic achievements are awarded.

The 2010 Four School Colloquium, hosted by NYU Stern’s Marketing Department, brought together more than 100 of the country’s foremost marketing researchers from Stern, Columbia, Wharton and Yale to share and present their most recent work on April 23.

At NYU Stern in April, CEO and President of China Merchants Bank Dr. Weihua Ma addressed students, professors and the press about the globalization of the Chinese banking industry and his bank’s vision for success in the global markets.

"Since the financial crisis, the number of class-action lawsuits against financial firms has spiked dramatically and SEC settlements with companies and managers are on the rise," says NYU Stern Professor of Accounting and Finance Baruch Lev.

The seventh annual conference organized by the Citi Leadership & Ethics Program and NYU Stern’s Business and Society Program Area, with generous support from the Citi Foundation, brought together academics, practitioners, and selected students to explore market-based solutions to some of the world's most intractable social problems.

On March 4th, the Social Enterprise Association in partnership with the Luxury & Retail Club threw a wildly successful 6th Annual Think Social, Drink Local at the Angel Orensanz House for Contemporary Art.

Former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was interviewed by Morgan Stanley Chairman John Mack before an audience of hundreds of NYU Stern, Law School and Wagner Graduate School of Public Service students and alumni on March 3 at the Stern School of Business. CNN Money taped the event and broadcast it intermittently the following day.

Morgan Stanley Chairman John Mack was on campus March 2 to address leadership development with NYU Stern MBA students in an intimate classroom setting. Interviewed by Stern Professor Diana Mayer, who teaches the MBA elective course Authentic Leadership Development, Mack spoke about the lessons he learned from leading on Wall Street, day to day and in times of crisis.

Naomi Klein, author of Shock Doctrine, and NYU Stern Dean Peter Henry spoke to undergraduate students in the course, “Business and Its Publics,” a part of the Social Impact Core requirement for all Stern freshmen, about big picture issues in today’s global markets.

As part of NYU Stern’s Berkley Center Himelberg Speaker Series, David Rose, an Inc. 500 CEO and serial entrepreneur, shared his experience with students and alumni on early-stage financing for startups.

As part of NYU Stern’s CEO Series, Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer was interviewed in February before NYU Stern students and alumni by Pulitzer-Prize-winning reporter Stephen Adler, senior vice president and editorial director of the Professional division of Thomson Reuters.
