The following information was released by the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth:
Tuck valuation expert Anant Sundaram has collaborated with Stern school’s Aswath Damodaran to create a new valuation app called uValue for all levels of investors.
While uValue works better for public companies with lots of published financial data, it is also capable of valuing start-ups, high-growth companies or companies whose margins may be currently negative but are expected to turn positive.
"We created this app with two simple goals," says Sundaram. "We wanted anyone who is keen to do a good valuation to have access to self-contained, fully functional tools to do so, and secondly, we wanted to offer a tool that is fundamentally educational. We often see that poor investment decisions start with poor valuations." The app includes self-contained explanations of key valuation concepts, access to industry data sets, and access to a free companion text book.
Sundaram and his uValue co-creator chose to initially develop the app for the iPad exclusively because of its form factor. The professors are already working on a version of uValue for the iPhone and the iPod Touch this summer.
The app, which is free, uses rigorous but practical tools, including the WACC (weighted average cost of capital) and DGM (dividend growth model), as well as advanced models such as APV (adjusted present value) and ROV (real options valuation). uValue includes a whole suite of commonly-used calculators to value bonds, convert leases, forecast exchange rates, and other tools.
uValue can be downloaded from the iTunes Apps Store and also can be accessed directly from the iPad App Store. Instructional videos can be found at www.uvalueapp.com, in the section ‘How to Use the App.’
